    Sentence Diagramming

Many learners are intimidated by diagramming sentences.  This skill, usually learned in middle school, takes patience and practice to acquire and perfect.  But have you ever considered diagramming sentences with your first grader?  We didn't either, until recently.  We found that our littlest learner, in imitation of our oldest learner, found diagramming sentences fun and easy when presently simply and combined with reading and drawing.  We have created diagramming resources in progressive levels to help teach this important but challenging skill to learners of all ages.

    Helpful Tips:

    • One way to use these resources is to have your child read a book of choice and then find and pick out sentences to read, write, and draw about on their own.  This has been a big hit in our home with our first grader.  I suggest I Can read it all by Myself Beginner Books®.  The Bright and Early Books for Beginning Beginners® series can also work fine too!  Five in a Row books can also be used although parents will probably need to help with the reading.  (The resource example picture at the top used this option.)

    • Encourage children to complete the drawing sheets with colour mediums.  Adding colour stimulates our desire to notice and notate details.

    • Choose subjects or titles for worksheets that go along with other academic areas.  For instance, if you are studying weather, complete a worksheet from the desired level focusing on weather or a simple science book on weather.  If you are studying a historical figure, use them as the focus for your worksheet.  It is always smart to combine subjects whenever possible.  This helps children make connections between subjects and prevents burn out for parents and learner.
