Create a Home Library
![]() |
A family project to help promote reading as well as help children organize their books and reads to practice thankfulness.
Books are one of those things that always need reorganizing and homeschoolers tend to collect them without even realizing it. Children love to role play and this project combines role playing with organization and reading.
Our children loved to play library, so we decided to turn our own collection of books into a fun library for them. Find the resources you'll need below to help make reading at home fun, enjoyable, and organized too!!
| Project Overview Steps
Step 1: Think about how you would like to organize your collection based on its size, content and readers needs. Help readers keep their books organized by genre or reading level with labels for plastic baskets, bookshelves or containers. This is an easy way to see what books you have or to move collections to eager reader's bedrooms. Many plastic containers fit directly onto prefab bookcases. |
| Step 2: Decide on the style of
labels you need. Book basket labels are available in quarter sheets as
well as in half sheets. Print out the Book Basket Label Set you need.
The heavier the bond of the paper, the better the end results. Cut apart
pieces and cover or laminate them for longevity and durability, if
possible. Place prepared labels on plastic book baskets and place on
shelves or place labels directly onto bookshelves using clear removable
tape. Labels will lift up out of the way to allow readers to easily
access books and other reading materials. As collections grow, simply
move the labels to match.
|
| Step 3: Decide if you would like to use library style Book Pockets and Book Info Cards for your collection. If so, print them out as needed, assemble, and affix, if desired. We like to store our Book Info Cards in a plastic index card holder that can be found at any office supply store.
|
| Step 4: Print out your family Library Membership Cards. Each sheet contains eight cards.
|
|
Step 5: Decide on the style of reading Log that you would like to use with your reader. Logs are available in two style - with genre definitions and without. Print out logs and begin keeping track of what your child reads and when. A Reading Log Cover is available for logs as well. |
