Free Resources to Help Homeschoolers Learn About Animals

One of the easiest ways for children to learn about God's glory is through studying animals. A favourite topic of almost all children, learning about animals helps children to see the awesome wisdom and creativity that God possesses but it also helps them see how we are uniquely made in God's Image - different from all other creatures on earth.

Below you will find lots of different types and style of resources.  Our hope to is that you will find something that you need or that will complement, enhance or supplement  the curriculum or learning program that you may already be using.  Most resources are printables including photo animal learning cards, oversized wall calendars, learning posters, animal notebooking sheets, animal worksheets, animal book studies, plus a few special resources including fun online games which we have created.

 

Creation Themed Monthly Calendar Animal Silhouette Oversized Wall Calendar

Use this printable any month of the year to teach about different animals. The theme is the creation of animals. God created all of the animals, and it was good. How well can you identify His creations? This calendar uses black and white silhouettes of animals and asks you to name each one. There is a different one for each day of the month. We have also included an answer sheet for anyone who may be needing a little help. Simply print out the sheets (we recommend using cardstock), cut apart on lines and affix to your prepared posterboard or bulletin board.  New to using our oversized calendars?

Animal Silhouette Matching Game

This simple guessing game is fun and easy to play. Simply identify the animal in the silhouette and match it to its name. This can be done using a Go Fish style of play, Concentration style for one to two players or play a variation of Old Maid called Great Creator. Great Creator is like playing Old Maid except that God in His goodness created all of the things pictured and we want to be with Him. The person who is left with the Great Creator card in the end is the winner.  To use, printout on card stock, cut apart and play.

Photo Animal Learning Cards

Download and use these colourful animal classification cards for elementary learners. By using a science textbook, resources you may have at home, or the internet, children can record data for a variety of animals using our learning cards for simple animal classification. Learners need only circle the correct answers to questions, so no writing is necessary. Once completed, these cards could be used for any number of activities and games. They could be laminated and taken on fieldtrips to zoos, pet stores, woodland parks and more. There are lots of different animal sets available.

What have You Learned About This Animal? Worksheets about Animal Traits

Kids have a natural affinity for learning about animals and the things that make each animal unique.  Our graphic organizer worksheets help children learn about a variety of animals using a simple design utilizing resources you may already have at home or that can easily be borrowed from the library. Simply print out and fill in. There are also blank templates provided as well for animals that may not be included in our collection. Offered in two varieties, the simpler version offers fewer boxes with more writing space while the advanced version provides more boxes but with smaller spaces.

Animal Comparisons Using Venn Diagrams

Use Venn diagrams to help children explore as well as compare and contrast animals or animal groups. To use these lead-in worksheets, simply decide what kind and how much information needs to be given about each animal or group to successfully help children draw conclusions from their comparisons. Information could include such things as name, number of legs, mode of transportation, animal group, skin covering, scientific name (genus/species), diet, habitat, geographical location habitat, endangered vs. domesticated status, and so forth. Images to represent animals or animal groups have been included to help reluctant writers while blank versions are also available.

Animal Themed Narration Art Cards

Animals can have personalities, get into mischief, be a hero or a friend or they can be just a simple beautiful creature to describe. These writing worksheets help children practice the skills of drawing, penmanship, writing and narration to illustrative prompts (aka story starters) featuring a number of different animals. Learners use the picture provided to inspire their writing by starting with the illustrative prompt, finishing the picture, and writing about some aspect of their artistic creation. These are usually very well received by learners because they allow for creative fun.

Play Syllable Symphony of Animal Fun

Play a simple Bingo style game with a twist to help children learn about animals and syllables at the same time. Introduce or review the concept of syllable sounds with children as they learn to say and spell the names of animals. This game has a neat twist to it in that it is played like bingo but uses a specific number of musical note graphics to represent the syllable sounds in a word. It is simple to make and play. This game can even be useful for non-readers as the parent could read the words and the child would only need count the syllable sounds using clapping if necessary. It is fast to complete and several rounds could be played within 15 minutes. Animal words utilize 1-5 syllables. This game is designed for 2-6 players of any age and includes game boards, cards, reference list, and instructions.
