The Unit Study Method

This method of learning combines multiple academic subjects together around one unifying topic.  Topics of unit studies generally surround the topics of science and social studies - including history, geography, and culture studies.

Many homeschooling families like using the unit study method because of the freedom they have in choosing study topics as well as the fact that they can cover the same material with multiple aged learners at the same time.

Because of its flexibility of content and structure, multiple popular learning tools can compliment this method such as project learning, notebooking, or lapbooking.  Although it can take a bit of time to develop studies and gather resources for them, many families find the effort well worth it and rewarding.

Special Features of this Method

  • Topics can be studied for as deeply as for as long as desired presenting a more natural way of learning.

  • Multi-aged children can learn together.

  • Topics for study are flexible and can focus around God.

  • Knowledge is more easily committed to memory because facts are presented in a related way.

  • Unit studies can be as simple or as elaborate as desired.

  • All academic subjects can be included in studies.

Weaknesses of this Method

  • Planning is necessary and can be time consuming.

  • Assessing learning can sometimes be a challenge.

  • Prepared unit study curricula can be expensive.

  • Unit study learning can leave gaps in learning if careful planning is not done.

  • Too many unit study activities or studies done back to back can sometimes cause burnout for learners as well as parents/planners.
