The Charlotte Mason (CM) Learning Method

This is a gentle, flexible liberal arts method of teaching children using:

-Short lessons 15-20min lessons per subject (Core subjects include reading, writing, and math; all other subjects are added on to the core.)

-Living books or books that are rich and come alive during reading

-Narrative recall beginning with oral and advancing to written usually around the age 10

-Nature walks and hands-on science lessons through observation

    -Good moral training habits

-Fine arts in both art and music appreciation

In essence children basically read, study, look at, or experience the best possible reading materials and natural educational opportunities and narrate back the important ideas they have taken away from them.  This is a very simplified explanation.

There is much more to the Charlotte Mason method than we have listed here so feel free to explore her method by reading some of her own free resources online using the links at the left.  You may also wish to purchase some resources that teach you about the method itself or how to adopt and implement it in your own homeschool.  For your convenience you can do that right from this page using the tool at the top.  We have either read or own all of these resources we recommend above.

      Special Features of this Method

    • Short lessons to help keep children attentive and engaged in the material,

    • Exposes children to the best quality literary materials

    • Focuses on first hand learning rather than assimilated learning from secondary or tertiary sources

    • Encourages children to "make leaps" out of curiosity, creative thinking, and love of learning

    • Stresses the formation of good habits and good moral character development

    • Allows Godly oriented direction to be pursued

    Weaknesses of this Method

    • Very child centered

    • May become too eclectic - all over the place

    • May steer on to focus on books rather than applied knowledge

    • Hard to determine what is twaddle or watered down literature

    • May leave out some higher learning studies because of the emphasis on art, literature, music, and nature

    • Requires steadfastness in character building and moral training
