Free Grammar Games that Teach About Contractions

Contractions are words, word groups or even syllables that have been shortened by omitting internal letters and adding an apostrophe in their place. Examples include the shortening of cannot to can't, do not to don't, and were not to weren't. This concept is partly responsible for creating modern slang words, but it can be a very useful grammatical device in speaking as well as writing.

Help your learners become more familiar with language arts and contraction pairs using our grammar games. You'll be glad you did.

Practice reading 32 pairs of contractions and/or matching up the words to the contractions using this interactive game. Print out and prepare carrots and word pairs. Pick carrots and read word sets. Carrots with a worm provide only one side of the contraction set, providing challenging fun. Alternate methods and challenge levels for game provided. For real fun, laminate them up and have the learner pull them from the ground -a brown cardboard box with a slit in it.
