Big Books of Narration for Nature Study

 

Nothing is so awesome to a child as those things that come from nature - weather, animals, seasons, stars, and the oceans.  There is so much to learn about and discover.  When children are excited to learn about things, it is only natural that they want to note down what they learn in some way that they can keep it to look at over and over again and even share with others.  We like to think that our Big Books of Narration meet just that very need for slightly older learners who enjoy reading works from Thornton W. Burgess and other such great writers.

You will find titles below to nature stories that we have read through in our own little homeschool.  The writing sheets are very easy to use and allow spaces for drawings as well as writing.  We've even included special character sheets in the Burgess Books to help children get to know the creatures they meet.  We've tried to make each narration book unique with a few special page features like a Science Facts Page and a Apply it to Your Faith pages for the Parables From Nature series.  You can choose to print out and use only the sheets you want or use them all.

 We have also included progress sheets for some of the titles.  These sheets were a way we came up with to keep track of the reading and the progress of our children's narration efforts.  In a true Charlotte Mason style, these progress sheets help to provide a reading schedule to allow the book to be savored rather than consumed by eager readers.  Slow digestion of the work helps to bring the plot, setting, and characters to life.  Of course, feel free to do whatever works for your family or to omit the progress sheets all together.  We are just sharing what worked for us.

As a special bonus feature in some of the progress sheets, we've included a special space for cross referencing topics from the book being narrated with the Handbook of Nature Study by Anna Comstock, which many homeschooling families use for nature and natural science study.
